Why operating system, browser and application updates are part of security.
More than new buttons
Developers fix bugs, including security vulnerabilities. Until a fix is installed, a device may remain exposed to a known issue. New features are only one reason to update software.
Enable automatic updates
Review settings for your operating system, browser and applications. Choose a convenient installation and restart window. For a work device managed by an organization, follow its update policy.
Use a trusted source
Use the built-in updater or the developer’s official website. A pop-up ad on an unrelated site demanding a browser update is not a trustworthy installation source.
Remember older devices
Check whether the device still receives security fixes. If support has ended, plan a move to a supported system or a replacement device. Back up important data before a major update.
